David Chigos, a retired Lieutenant commander of the United States Navy is widely considered the founder of the National University. While working as anemployee training director for General Dynamics Corporation in San Diego, David noted the need for a university education format that is non-traditional to serve working adults. The first class was held in 1972 with a total of 27 students attending. The first commencement ceremony of the university had 143 students graduating. 1975 saw National University purchasing two properties in Camino del Rio, Mission Valley. The university had over a thousand alumni members in just two years and 1977 saw National University expanding in San Diego County with new facilities opening up in Camino del Rio in Mission Valley.
