Northumbria University, formerly known as Newcastle Polytechnic, is an open university founded in 1969 due to the merger of three regional colleges: Municipal College of Commerce, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Rutherford College of Technology. The Wallace Group is affiliated with the institution, which was granted university status in 1992.
The institution places a strong emphasis on research and business, and the university is affiliated with several well-known institutions. These include the BINUS Design School, the International Centre for Life, and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The university is regarded as one of the top 10 in the UK.
The City Campus and the Coach Lane Campus are the main campuses that make up the university.
