Edinburgh Napier University was set up in 1964. It is a private university for higher education in Scotland and is affiliated with MillionPlus. The university was initially named Napier Technical College in 1992. In its early years, it operated with 800 learners admitted to chemistry, cabinet making, boat building, chemistry, and engineering courses.
The institute changed its name four times before adopting its present name in 2009. It is named after John Napier, who designed the decimal point (.) and logarithms.
It has one campus each in Sighthill, Merchiston, and Craiglockhart. The former serves over 5,000 learners and Schools of Applied Sciences and Health & Social Care staff with facilities such as life-like hospital wards, a suite of clinical skills, labs of sports science and [EN]GAGE sports centre.
The third is home to business and law schools and Hydropathic Hospital. It includes two lecture auditoriums, one extensive library, multimedia labs, and language.

The Merchiston campus houses Schools of Engineering, Computing, Built Environment, Arts and Creative Industries. It also incorporates a computing centre of 500 seats, one newsroom, computer games lab, TV and radio studios, and upgraded music studios. Its library offers traditional and online resources for research, learning, and teaching. The residences lie near shopping complexes, entertainment hubs, and recreational centres connected to campuses through public transport.
