Established back in 1964, the Singapore Institute of Management is a private institute spearheaded by the Economic Development Board to provide training and educate the next generation of leaders and managers who will lead the country's economic development. The institute made a name for itself by providing short crash courses to managers by empowering them with essential skills required in the professional world.
The three major diploma programmes offered by the Singapore Institute of Management included management studies, personnel development and marketing during the 1970s. During this time Singapore Institute of Management laid a strong foundation for other degree and certificate programmes. The 1980s saw the Singapore Institute of Management collaborate with foreign educational institutions like the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the University of London in an effort to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees locally. The university also commissioned in-house training and consultancy services to assist local enterprises and MNCs.
Singapore's MOE invited Singapore Institute of Management to run the Open University of the United Kingdom in 1992. The United Kingdom Open University accredited this open university and in 2002, it was renamed and opened as the SIM Open University Centre. The 2000s saw the Singapore Institute of Management receive the MOE mandate and began its private university aimed at adult learners.
