event management assignment on the FIFA World Cup 2022

Question

Task: How can the performance of the FIFA World cup projects be evaluated using event management assignment research strategies?

Answer

Introduction
The purpose of thisevent management assignment report is to highlight the key aspects of an event management. Herein, one of the largest event is selected which is FIFA Football World Cup 2022. The key principles affecting the event management assignmentproject and event management is mentioned with reference to FIFA World Cup. It is followed by the fundamental operations that the tournament will conduct for a month long global event.

1.0 Principles of key project and event management
The five principles governing key project and event management assignmentare-

Initiation Process: In this stage, the new event management assignmentproject is defined or a phase of the existing event by securing authorisation to commence the project. It involves approaching the issues adequately and reducing them as much as possible (Allen, 2021). The initiation process for FIFA Football World Cup began a year ahead when the operational arm of FIFA and the Host Country- Qatar, achieved ISO 20121 certification for delivering the tournament in a successful manner for the first time in the Middle East and Arab world. The ISO 20121 was granted after conducting an extensive audit procedure that was initiated during the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021.

Event Planning Process: The planning process involves the procedures required to establish the overall scope of the event, refine the objectives and define the entire course of action to be played during the event to attain the overall objective of the project that was undertaken to achieve(Janjusevic and Mathur, 2021). Planning aevent management assignmentproject consist of a chronological series of never-ending tasks in which a maximum number of team members are involved. Qatar began the planning process to host FIFA Football World Cup 2022 12 years before. Qatar planned to build 7 stadiums and a new airport, and a metro system for $36 billion for the tournament (Fifa.com, 2022). It had opened five-lane highways and large construction efforts during a gruelling time period to ensure the spectators across the globe could attend a month-long event.

Executing Process: It constitutes the entire event management
assignmentprocess undertaken to complete the work stipulated in the event planning to satisfy the event speculations. It is during the executing process when the event management actually diverges from the event planning. Qatar is all-ready and several match-tested for the World Cup in all the seven new stadiums built for the tournament. Officials from FIFA have confirmed the same, and they are impressed with the stunning design of Al-Bayt Stadium and Al Janoub in scoring 10 out of 10 for stylistics and aesthetics (Bbc.com, 2022). The metro system is currently operational as well as the five-lane highways are open for the public to use.

Monitoring and Controlling Process:The principle narrates the need to monitor, evaluate, and control the event management assignmentproject's progress and performance, spot any areas where plan adjustments are necessary, and start implementing those changes (Nunkooet al., 2018). The monitoring and controlling process must be a constant affair to match the expectations of the stakeholders. This pevent management assignmentrocess shall likely be more effective when the tournament begins from this match, and feedback from the spectators shall be gathered at the end of each match. The problems like racism, poor financial management and crowd violence were the major hurdles that the people faced in the previous World Cup held in Russia (Sports et al., 2022). Adequate controlling and monitoring actions are planned to avoid such incidents in Qatar.

event management assignmentClosing Process: The closing process is the last principle for event planning which requires performing the final activities to formally close the event. The closing ceremony will be held in Lusail on 18 December (Worldcupsc.com, 2022). On this day, Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) will remove and donate a majority of 80000 seats to different sporting projects across the globe to mark the end of the tournament.

2.0 Analysis of core fundamental operational activities
The core operational activity of the FIFA Football World Cup is to arrange a quadrennial global football championship for men arranged by FIFA wherein 32 senior national team members will take part. It is the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from 20 November to 18 December 2022. It is a first-time in the history of football that Qatar will organise such a big event. Moreover, it is also the first time that the FIFA Football World Cup is held in November-December instead of May, June and July due to intense temperature and heat waves prevailing over the Middle East (Digitalhub.fifa, 2022). The selection and qualification of teams likely to play in the tournament are the first fundamental operations. FIFA organises its own qualifying competition in partnership with 6 continental confederations. The hosting country will automatically be qualified for the tournament. All the 211 FIFA member associations are eligible to enter the qualification stage to play in the tournament, and the best 32 national teams are selected.

The final draw takes place after qualifying for the play-off in the semi-finals. It was held on April 1, 2022. All 32 teams were divided into 4 sections based on the respective FIFA Men's World Rankings as published on March 2022. The first section contains the host team (Qatar) and the remaining 7 highest ranking teams. In the second section are the following 8 best teams, followed by the net best 8 teams in section 3 (Fifa.com, 2022). Section 4 contains the lowest 5 ranked teams in addition to the placeholders for two inter-confederation play-off winners and the UEFA Path A play-off winner. The last main event management assignmentoperation of FIFA is fixing the squads. Prior to submission of the final squad that shall play the tournament, a provisional squad of all 32 teams are submitted to FIFA containing up to 55 players roster.

4.0 Evaluation of main sustainability issues of the FIFA Football World Cup
FIFA Football World Cup, which is scheduled to commence in late November, is expected to produce 3.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide which is much ahead of the 2.1 million tonnes that were produced in Russia in 2018 and far more than 71 countries across the globe. However, FIFA claimed a carbon-neutral World Cup in 2022, wherein the early bids from Qatar promised a new technology of cooling down the stadiums, surrounding areas and training grounds with advanced new technology (Cho, 2022). However, such a claim is highly dismissed by climate scientists stating that such technology is highly misleading and extremely dangerous. It was further added to raise the sustainability issues of the tournament that as there will be a direct human connection to the tournament, there will be a huge amount of carbon emission for every single match played in the FIFA Football World Cup. These carbon emissions will have a cumulative impact around the globe. The rise in the sea temperature is also a concerning factor environmental issue for the event (Walker, 2022). FIFA shall try to hold the sea temperature to increase to 1.5ºC; however, there is very limited space to outflow the emission outside the country in a sustainable manner. On this event managementassignment it is also observed, the brand new public transportation system in Qatar has caused massive solid waste in the country, affecting environmental sustainability into a major question.

FIFA World Cup impacts the environment and creates many sustainability issues such as it generates 2.72 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the FIFA World Cup has taken an initiative to implement aevent management assignmentsustainability strategy that maximizes the sustainability preparation, post-tournament activities, and staging of the tournament. In addition to that, the main purpose of the strategy is to achieve all the obligations, leverage opportunities, and manage risks concerned with people's well-being and rights, environmental protection, and economic development. As stated by Cayolla, Santos, and Quintela (2021), over the past years FIFA has been strengthening the requirements and continuing the programs concerned with environmental protection, encompassing such issues as waste management, climate change, sustainable construction, recycling, and procurement. In the present year, FIFA World Cup has brought a sustainability strategy that includes initiatives that mitigate the emissions related to a tournament like transportation of low emission, energy-efficient stadiums, and practices of event management assignmentsustainable waste management. Apart from that this sustainability strategy led by FIFA World Cup enables delivering a benchmark for economic, human, social, and environmental development. As opined by Van Rheenen, and Melo (2021), FIFA has ensured it meeting the goal to offset greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it also initiated the launching of a carbon-neutral tournament that delivers a four-step process namely awareness, reduction, measurement ad offsetting.

5.0 Appraising the concept of CSR and its issues while undertaking FIFA World Cup
FIFA World Cup has also been actively working on implementing CSR activities within the tournament. It actively works on improving people’s lives all around the world through the help of the FIFA Foundation as well as programs like Social Responsibility. As discussed by Gupta (2021), FIFA has also been working with regional, global, and government development agencies, international organizations, groups of human rights, and local nonprofit organizations to bring social impact. Moreover, FIFA also affects society in large numbers as it helps to promote positive change all around the world and thus raises support for the reconstruction and recovery of destroyed or damaged sports infrastructure worldwide. The event management assignment research shows in recent years FIFA World Cup governing body has strengthened its commitment to building a better future by defining the strategy of social responsibility as well as setting the department of CSR. As mentioned by Zeimers, and Constandt (2022), FIFA has now been supporting humanitarian activities and made many charitable donations for two decades and has moved from the passive role of philanthropic to being involved and responsible actor. However, over the years FIFA implemented several programs on CSR activities during the tournament of the World Cup in South Africa and Brazil, ranging from health and educational initiatives to philanthropic projects. As opined by Manoli, and Anagnostou (2022), CSR not only impacts the society where people live but also creates a healthy community. It also builds an ethical stand where members are accountable for fulfilling their public duty. Apart from that FIFA governs several aspects of the game such as regulating the rules of play, overseeing player transfer internationally, organizing international competitions, and establishing standards for coaching, refereeing, encouraging, and sports medicine. As said by Manoli, and Anagnostou (2022), FIFA is being active through concrete projects and initiatives like "20 Centers for 2010" and "Say No to Racism". Furthermore, FIFA also tries to address social problems by launching projects and events that safeguard the well-being of players and its team. Some of the issues taken into consideration on this event management assignmentare racial inequity, climate change, and many more. However, FIFA also makes commitments to safeguarding the welfare and rights of workers that are engaged in the FIFA World Cup.

6.0 Examining and considering improvement of stakeholders’ well-being while running the FIFA World Cup
The event management assignmentresearch showsFIFA is one of the important tournaments consisting of various stakeholders and players from various parts of the world. It has a huge governing body that looks after the whole structure and functions. The stakeholders of FIFA involve ECA, which is an independent body that represents football clubs at the European level, FIFPRO, and WLF. FIFA World Cup has been inclusive and welcoming to everyone people of various races, religions, cultures, sexual orientations, other diverse groups, and gender. As stated by Ullahet al. (2021), the event believes in succession the mission by ensuring fully inclusive games and working with key stakeholders representing diverse communities that benefits from the measures and integrating their expertise and perspectives within the work. The event managementassignment findings also show the event also launched its first meeting with core stakeholder Groups on Anti-Discrimination and Inclusion. Moreover, it also ensures a reiterated commitment to bringing diversity to some of the leading organizations within this field. In addition to that, the participants mainly cover key areas like race, gender, equality, disability, LGBTIQ, and disability inclusion. However, FIFA World Cup's stakeholders were improved by bringing change in the working process and well-being. It also ensures equal participation in the decision-making process and initiates bringing other improvements in the well-being and welfare of the stakeholders. As opined by Van Rheenen, and Melo (2021), the stakeholders also made commitments to making sponsorship deals with other promoters and sponsors within the tournament as this increased the funds and profitability index. The initiatives taken into consideration by stakeholders of FIFA are training of personnel in anti-discrimination which is involved in tournament delivery, implementation of stadium measures detecting as well as addressing discriminatory incidents. Moreover, steps were also taken by the event on accessing the tournament experience and establishing and delivering human rights grievance mechanisms. The key partners of FIFA identified on this event management assignmentare Adidas, Coca-Cola, Quarter Airways, VISA, and Hyundai. As discussed by Cayolla, Santos, and Quintela (2021), mainly the stakeholders of sports teams include athletes, media, charities, political leaders, host families, restaurants, hotels, the community, sponsors, businesses, spectators, civic leaders, and host families. Among all the stakeholders suppliers and sponsors are considered to be the important stakeholders for FIFA World Cup. Since these stakeholders enable teams that offer their fans an important service and economic support. Hence, stakeholder well-being is ensured by giving them equal opportunity to participate, put up their views and make decisions accordingly. Stakeholders are considered to be important members of the FIFA World Cup tournament as it influences the decision-making process in strategies and programs.

Conclusion
It can be concluded on this event management assignmentthat Qatar Football World Cup 2022 shall be a successful event as the event compels in bringing a cultural change and progress in the high-risk part of the globe. The lack of knowledge about the culture and Islamic Law has caused a sense of discrimination in the minds of the Western country towards Middle East. However the event management assignment findings conclude organising such a big event shall massively dilute such discrimination for the people coming into Qatar to witness the matches.
