Cloud Computing Assignment: Architecting Solutions To The Risks

Question

Task: As a result of your work analysing their existing systems, PowerUpOnTheRoof Inc has now engaged your company to produce a detailed, low-level implementation design to help them transition to cloud-based services. The scoping document you produced was enough to convince Melon Tusk that the general idea of moving services into “the cloud” was technically possible, and, at least in general terms, also reasonable from a business perspective. You now need to take this one step further, and produce a detailed design document that could be given to an engineering team to evaluate and implement. As a result of your work analysing their existing systems, PowerUpOnTheRoof Inc has now engaged your company to produce a detailed, low-level implementation design to help them transition to cloud-based services. Your detailed design will take the form of a document containing, at a minimum, the following information:

. An introduction which makes clear reference to your findings/recommendations from Assessment Task #2. These will be expected to be refined in your detailed design.

. A detailed design for each of the individual PowerUpOnTheRoof nc. services being transitioned (either fully, or partially) from on-premises to cloud-delivered. For each PowerUpOnTheRoof Inc. service under consideration,

your detailed design should document:

  • The elements considered in this part of your design
  • The cloud provider product(s) being used to implement this service,
  • Justification of your design choice(s), including specific reference to product fit to both technical and business aspects of PowerlipOnTheRoof Inc. services. If there are alternative implementation approaches, you should state you recommended approach, and clearly explain why you are making that recommendation over the other possibilities. In many real-world cases, you need to make design decisions based on incomplete information or seemingly equivalent design candidates. By documenting why you are making a particular recommendation, you are enabling future engineers/architects to understand your design, and even to refine/change your design based on extra information which you didn’t have at the time.
  •  A detailed configuration for any cloud-provider products needed to implement your design. It’s not enough to say “Implement this using Product X; you need to demonstrate how that product should be configured to meet the goals of delivering this particular PowerUpOnTheRoof Inc. service, and why that particular configuration is the best one for this project.
  • Any compromises/concerns/issues/interactions to be aware of for implementation and ongoing operations.
  • A viable transition plan for this service. This does not have to be a step-by-step plan, but should be sufficient to show that you have considered how this particular service can be practically transitioned, and what the implications of doing so will be for the business.
  • A clear statement of costs for this component over time.

. A detailed design for any service(s) to be shared or common between other elements of your design, In addition to the detailed design requirements stated above for standalone services, you should also document:

  • Rationale for why these are common/shared
  • The estimated contribution of each dependent service to resource utilisation.

. Any implementation dependencies, sequencing and/or timing which a Project Manager in charge of implementation would need to be aware of. For example, you should note ¡fa particular service requires a 3 week lead-time after ordering. Whilst you are not acting as the project manager here, a general schedule of implementation should be produced and included to allow you to verify implementation feasibility and identify any critical areas that might prevent a smooth implementation.

. The criteria to be used to measure/quantify the success (or otherwise) of your project. You do not have to actually perform any measurements, only define your success criteria sufficiently that an independent third party could objectively perform the actual measurement. Where Assessment Task #2 was specifically targeted to C-level executives, Assessment Task #4 is to be targeted to a cross-functional engineering team which has the following structure:

. A Project Manager, reporting to the PowerUpOnTheRoof mc, CTO (Chief Technical Officer)

. A Senior Engineer with solid knowledge and experience of the project

. Up to twelve (12) experienced engineers who have some previous experience with building and operating services “in the cloud” for the particular provider being used. This includes a mix of system administrators, network engineers, and operations staff.

. A technical and a management representative from each of the existing teams delivering the IT services at PowerUpOnTheRoof Inc. These representatives are on the team to provide answers about the existing services, and to assist in transition planning for their service. Management has guaranteed that existing staff for transitioned services will not lose their jobs; these staff are actually looking forward to helping and learning about running their systems ‘in the cloud’.

Your detailed design needs to be understood and implemented by this team.

Detailed design of service for the transition to cloud-based services
Software as a Service
Elements to be considered in the design: Software as a service business faces challenges concerning the business plan development and its meticulous execution. There are wide ranges of elements, which are required to be considered for effective implementation of the designing and efficient management of several tasks(O'Hern et al. 2018).These elements are cost per acquisition, churn rate, monthly recurring revenue, and lifetime value.

Cost per acquisition: The business needs to spend less money per customer concerning the revenue generated, as this would result in the achievement of success for the business (Syed, Fatehi, Venkataraman, & Prabhu, 2019). Along with this, it is important to use customer analytics for determining the segment that would generate the greatest returns

Lifetime value: The long term forecasting of the business would help in understanding the value of the customers. The finance team would help in identifying the detailed calculations.

Database storage: This is considered as an important element of the design examined in the cloud computing assignment as there is need of extensive computer infrastructure, which would help in efficient management of database (Foo & Murthy, 2017). POTR has successfully evaluated the compatibility requirements with the cloud migration.

Cloud provider products to be used in the case scenario of cloud computing assignment
The cloud provider product, which is to be used in the effective implementation of SaaS will be entirely based on customer relationship management. The two products in this category include Pipedrive and fresh sales.

(Source: Guo& Ma, 2018)

The product finds great application for the sales team within the organization as it is easy and can be easily customized as per the user needs. Through this, several pipelines can be established with a list of stages.

cloud computing assignment

Figure 2: Freshsales
(Source: Rodríguez et al. 2017)

It includes various tools such as productivity enrichment for profile and in-app tracking events, which can be effectively used by SaaS business for, single CRM solution.

Justification for the design choices
The products, which are selected for implementing the design explored in the cloud computing assignment are appropriate enough. Pipedrive is a SaaSproduct, which is based on CRM, which would help POTR in planning action with its simple approaches (Ganesan&Chithralekha, 2016). Along with this, it also collaborated with the third party application and a free version is available for getting started with the tool. The benefits provided with the product comply with the technical as well as business requirements. As far as FreshSales is considered in this context of cloud computing assignment, the product comes with enhanced benefits, which would enhance the productivity of the business. It provides a graphical view of the sales, which can help the business in tracking the leads. Thus, the requirements of the products comply with the business, as it is highly adaptable (Hemmati, Carlson, Nayebi, Ruhe, & Saunders, 2017).

The design choices of the product are based on flexibility and better features. The alternative implementation approaches for the service that can be recommended can be based on the security and scalability aspect(Suarez et al. 2019). These recommendations provided within this cloud computing assignment would further ensure the effective implementation of the elements to be considered in designing. The future engineers or architects should consider these aspects before finalizing any design. It is important for POTR to develop a model of instruction, which would be based on POTR infrastructure. This would facilitate the preparation of applications as well as data for POTR (Chapman, 2019).

Detailed configuration for cloud provider products
The design illustrated in the cloud computing assignment can be implemented through the integration of Freshsales as it provides its wide range of benefits to the operating industry and efficiently manages the interactions with potential customers. The major configuration of the product includes one-click phone, sales tracking, management, event tracking and so on. Along with this, the users can also personalize the bulk mails and monitor the activities on the mails. Furthermore, it also tracks the web pages, which are interacting with the prospects, and thereby segments it (van de Weerd, Mangula, &Brinkkemper, 2016). Along with this, it is also clear in this section of cloud computing assignment that the integration of network infrastructure will also facilitate the match up with the compatibility requirements and as required relevant modifications can be made. The data rate of the existing system in POTR is quite slow and the presence of slow internet connection there has been many failures (Mori et al. 2016). Hence, it is important for POTR to handle the operation with agile practices.

Issues to be aware of for implementation of operations
There are certain issues identified in the context of cloud computing assignment which require to be considered for the successful implementation of the operation.

  • There are chances that the selected product does not fit into multiple deployment options and not flexible enough for broader customization
  • The lack of business insight can result in the closure of sales and thus, it is important to consider the extent of implementation of the product (Gholami, Daneshgar, Beydoun, &Rabhi, 2017).
  • The integration process of the product on the SaaS can be a huge burden and hence, it is crucial to plan the integration needs in order to implement it efficiently.

Viable transition plan

cloud computing assignment

Figure 3: Impact of SaaS
(Source: Pahl, Jamshidi, &Weyns, 2017)

The transition to SaaS comprises of several stages, which are illustrated below within this cloud computing assignment:

  • It is important to understand the impact of various facets of the business such as engineering, sales, and finance
  • Use the start product which can be based on any particular areas of choice
  • Test drive for market potential at a much lower costs
  • Choosing the level of SaaS delivery model
  • Planning of the SaaS roadmap and time management for transition
  • Consideration of SLA requirements
  • Outsource of Host to the cloud computing environments
  • Moving ahead towards service-oriented architecture
  • Plan accordingly for automating

Costs involved in the components overtime
The study developed in the cloud computing assignment signifies that the cost involved in the implementation of the service can be determined by following the initial costs involved for the traditional software and adding an annual fee of around 20% for maintenance and support (de Morais et al. 2017). Along with this, it also includes the IT costs such as support services and renewal of hardware.

Platform as a service
Elements to be considered in the design
The elements that are required to be considered for implementing the design mentioned herein cloud computing assignment includes API development and management, business analytics, business process management, and communications. POTR can consider host selection, which is quiet fit enough to undergo migration to cloud (Suarez et al. 2017). It implements 4-bit oriented OS, which successfully matches with the requirement of migration. Majority of the applications as well as software that are used by POTR is compatible with the cloud service without initiating any changes in the OS.

API development and management: This element for PaaS helps in the development and ensuring security in the API as well as microservices. It also includes end-to-end application management and new interfaces

Business intelligence: This helps in analyzing the insights of the business and the patterns of behavior for making better decisions (Ju, Kim, &Ahn, 2016).

Business performance management: Through the element discussed herein cloud computing assignment, PaaS can get access to the BPM platform, which is delivered as a service. It also integrates IT components which are required various management for the process.

Communications: Through this element, PaaS act as a delivery mechanism for most of the communication platforms and lets developers add communication features.

Cloud provider products to be used

The cloud provider products that are required to use for implementing PaaS are Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Sales force.com

Figure 4: Amazon Web services using SaaS
(Source: Still et al. 2017)

cloud computing assignment

Figure 5: Microsoft Azure using PaaS
(Source: Simonsson, Magnusson, &Johanson, 2019)

Justification for the design choices
The selected product for the designing of PaaS is AWS, which comprises of a wide range of benefits. AWS provides a solution to the business through inter-connected web services. It helps the companies in a wide range of workloads such as game development, data processing, development and so on. AWS also provides flexibility to the users for choosing the servers and at the same time, it saves time and money (Sebastian et al. 2017). The product is appropriate and fits right both in terms of technical as well as business aspects. This would allow POTR to stimulate the live environment for the fraction of testing costs on the premises. The 4-boit OS that is to be used in the host selection is quite compatible enough with the cloud services. There is so such need for changing the OS(Vuoloet al. 2016). This would thereby foster the low costs in the overall migration process and would result in replacement of essentialcomponents as well as workface. There are a wide range of integration points that are preferably used by customers such as payment gateways, external storages as well as web services (Daši? et al. 2017). Hence, it is important for POTR to analyse the complexity in order to ensure proper functioning as wellas seamless experience.

Detailed configuration for cloud provider products
AWS comes with a wide range of specifications, which can foster effective implementation in PaaS. It helps the companies in providing quality services as well as provides support to their business. In addition to these, it also performs functions such as scaling, administrating, and patching of the infrastructure. The other major configuration of AWS includes rendering and management of the database (Lee et al. 2018). These include the relational database, non-relational database, data warehouse and graph database, which provides a wide range of benefits. Other configurations include storage, which provides economical and flexible usage (Markendahl, Hossain, &Jonsson, 2018). The infrastructure of POTR Company offer a wide range of functions through which it serves the basic needs. There are wide range of systems, which are necessary to reach the desired goal such as network connectivity, billings, interaction system, process control and access control. However, the costs that are involved in the process due to large workforce and extensive operations. This particular model inspected in the context of cloud computing assignment will significantly help in efficient handling the computer and other related infrastructures. Along with this, the model will also help in addressing various infrastructure needs of the systems such as virtualisation, CDN and computing.

Issues to be aware of for implementation of operations
It is important to be aware of the AWS applications as it is important to meet the goals do the business. For this, it is important to consider KPIs and evaluate cloud applications accordingly. Acceptance of new technologies is another major issue faced with the integration of AWS (Park, Lee, Park, Eun, & Kim, 2016). Quality, reliability as well as the performance of the cloud application is a major factor for the seamless migration. The selected application should require minimum time and quick access for the effective implementation of the service. Along with this, there are certain risks illustrated in this aspect of cloud computing assignment which required to be considered such as diminished consumer faith, malware viruses, regulatory activities, loss of property which is quite intellectual in nature. Improvements in the churn of individual customers can also create significant difficulty in this area.

Viable transition plan
The viable transition plan for PaaS includes:

  • It includes cloud envisioning wherein the strategy for technology adoption is assessed based on business schools
  • Cloud assessment involves the cloud readiness, roadmap and capability review
  • The assessment of a portfolio involves the development of the application and prioritization of the portfolio (Romberg, Quantius, & Philpot, 2016).
  • The fourth stage involves wherein the API strategy is developed along with migration planning.
  • POTR also requires verifying the technology which is currently used and should also cover respective legal aspects of the deployment.
  • The application or the software which is being currently used by POTR needs to be modified as per the requirements of the cloud structure.

Costs involved in the components overtime
The nonrecurring costs involved in vendor managed PaaS include no upfront costs however; there are long-term commitments that would reduce the ongoing costs.

Detailed design for services shared or common between other elements of the design
Cloud computing is an emerging technology. Every company is switching to adopt cloud computing services. Cloud computing has made the working efficiency of the companies easier. With the help of cloud computing the transformation of information between two elements are secured (Huang & Wu, 2017). Cloud computing is in major demand, as it offers every type of services like private, public or hybrid. These types of services offered companies are rising up to provide great competition.

What is the rationale for sharing the services in the case of cloud computing assignment?
The reasons for sharing the services between other elements are:

Accessibility: One of the best services provided by cloud is that it holds the information strongly. It means that it is easy for the companies to access the stored information at anywhere at any time (Al-Jabri, Mustafa &Sohail, 2018). It is highly acceptable technology for the sharing of information between two pints due to the security of the information stored.

Sporadic batch process: Cloud computing offers the flexibility of subtracting and adding of information and services according to a project needs. Therefore, if there is no work going between two elements, then the resources are not wasted or do not end up with unused services.

Strategic edge: According to the research done on the cloud computing assignment, the management of documentation is preferably done through the share point which holds a wide range ofdocuments for various business applications of POTR. The vital requirements for effective design includes 500GB data capacity, 3 server applications having a volume of 4GB each and other front each servers (Pancholi & Patel, 2016).As far as document sharing among the various levels of POTR is concerned, the workforce is facing difficulties with the share-points. These issues include requirement of space increasing implementation of Google Drive and other space management software. With the migration to cloud services, POTR can easily tackle the issues that associated with space and along with this; it can efficiently use self-mange billing systems.

Estimated contribution of dependent service to resource utilization
The contribution of pipedrive in expanding businesses is:

Organized lead collection
The simple layout of the pipe drive has helped the companies to generate a huge amount of lead management. It provides infinite possibilities of configuration. The system helps in collecting various types of information with the help of customization of web forms (Pilkington, 2016). The cloud computing assignment examines that the pipe drive CRM management integration helps the users to provide leads. The leads generated do not depend on numbers. The collected information can be placed directly or indirectly to others websites.

Customization is extended
The pipe drive has given the opportunity of making everything customize. With the help of these features, companies can provide customized filed in order to modify the sales. It also offers the service of turning off and on of the modules whenever required (Pancholi & Patel, 2016). These features mentioned in this part of cloud computing assignment are useful when dealing with clients and needs to access various filters at the same time. It makes easy to personalize client’s messages or sharing with groups.

Implementation dependencies for project Manager
One of the services used by the project manager is SaaStechnology. For successful implementation of the SaaSmodel the project manager needs to follow the following steps:

Objectives and goals
The manager needs to understand the business objectives. There needs to be a defined period for installing the various services offered by cloud computing. If the goals and objectives are clear from the beginning, it helps in keeping a focus on particular software installation (Kaushik & Kumar, 2016). For performing successful operations, some of the cloud computing services require the time of 6-12 months and some 1-3 years. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the project manager to decide which type of service or software POTR is requiring.

Key stakeholders
A successful project requires a strong sponsor for investing in the financial outcome of the project. The project manager needs to identify the right type of key stakeholder. It is evident in the context of this cloud computing assignment that the manager must identify the real cause of the stakeholder behind the project; this will help in the project's success (Sudarsanam & Umasankar, 2019). For any kind of cloud computing, the number of people requires is maximum 3 to 5 in number.

Project plan
This part of the implementation process examined in this segment of cloud computing assignment offers a high level of visibility. The project plan needs to be accurate when dealing with large cloud computing. After deciding the type of software service needs to be installed, it is the responsibility of the manager to create a flexible project plan. The following steps depicted in the cloud computing assignment followed while implementing the SaaS model:

  • Data center
  • Connectivity and security in network infrastructure
  • Hardware installation both in storage and systems
  • Monitoring and backup tools
  • Customer support
  • The bandwidth of the network
  • Management of security

Dependencies
It is very important for the manager to decide the bandwidth requirement of the SaaS model. Bandwidth plays an important part as it maintains the connectivity of providing better user experience. It is necessary for the manager to investigate the requirement of bandwidth network. The type of speed is necessary for reaching a particular location. The following measures provided within this cloud computing assignment are taken while connecting the bandwidth of SaaS:

  • Data center of 24*7*365
  • Frequency testing
  • Availability of power systems in case of any hardware failure
  • Security of installation campus (Gura& Roth, 2017 )

Risk
As per the research carried on the cloud computing assignment, it is clear that the risk factor involved in the SaaS implementation is the functionality and reliability. This particular step noted in the cloud computing assignment is critical. While installing of SaaS model in system, most of the time it has been that there is failure because the system is not capable of holding such software. Therefore it is compulsory to check the hardware components. It needs to be ensured that the hardware part is working time with the software part.

Monitoring solution
There is a time when the hardware part is not working accordingly to the software part. The integration of monitoring solution helps in keeping timely intervention between both the parts. This solution helps to avoid disasters. The system monitoring needs to include the following parts illustrated in the next section of cloud computing assignment:

  • CPU and memory usages
  • Operating and application systems
  • Different applications like TCP layer, different types of servers, database.

Criteria for quantifying success
Firstly, the implementation of the PaaS model provides lower-cost operations, high work efficiency and innovative ideas for companies. This particular process helps in creating marketing opportunities, more clients for the business. The most important of this model is that the data transformation is secure between two elements. The primary concern of the key stakeholder is the security of information, which is fulfilled by the PaaS model (Seider, Schreiber, Marquardt &Brüggemann, 2016). This is the reason this model is in market demand. It provides a high level of internal security and data resiliency. With the help of this model, it is easy for POTR to adjust its business strategies. It provides businesses a different approach, procurement methods. It simply helps in meeting the stakeholder’s expectations. Sometimes it becomes critical to install the software. Most of the time problems are faced in the installation of hybrid environments.

Conclusion
The cloud computing assignment concludes that the systems that are identified previously can be appropriately migrated to the cloud platform. The major aspects of the POTR business such as applications, processes and requirements are compatible with the migration to cloud structure. It allows people to access the same type of applications with the help of the internet. The data collected with the help of the cloud is always secure and processed by remote servers. Most of the benefits offered by cloud computing are data security, efficiency, mobility, disaster recovery, competitive edge. All these factors mentioned in this section of cloud computing assignment make businesses think and adopt cloud-computing services. It increases production, collaboration, and revenue. Migrating to cloud services has provided POTR with greater level of working, accessibility, and low range of costs is involved in the completion of the processes.
