Once a man passed by a herd of elephants when a bizarre sight stopped him in his tracks. A small rope tied up the front leg of all elephants. It was so easy for them to break free, and yet, they weren’t even trying to do so. Astonished, the man turned to inquire from the trainer of the herd about this.
How do you stop such magnificent creatures with a small piece of rope?
The trainer told him the trick. When these elephants were young, he used the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to keep them. As they grew up, they started to believe they cannot break away. They assume the rope can still hold them, so they don’t try to break free.
A largely driven lesson from this story is how most people spend their lives hanging onto expectations of failure, only because they lost once. While I think there is more to this story. Why does a person fall into the assumption in the first place? Do they lack enlightenment? Or suffer from low confidence?
Whatever the reason may be, and regardless of their past experiences, education helps to weed out all presumptions. The iconic Martin Luther King Jr. aptly puts it, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.”
And unless you expose yourself to varying dimensions of learning, you cannot do that. The aims you have for the future will vanish in thin air.
On the contrary, acquiring education helps you advance your goals. Here is how:
You take control of your life
You don’t want to be the elephant!
Education helps in removing the cage that keeps you. A range of subjects in academic life helps you understand the basics of each domain. Later, you can pick up the one you want to pursue further in your career.
With sufficient education, the power of decision-making goes in your hand (once you’re of legal age). Societal norms do not restrict you anymore. You know how to think out of the box and fight chains meant to bring you down.
With relevant education, you can choose to become a CEO or a home-based entrepreneur. You don’t have to rely on career advice from those around you.
You learn the skills required for your goals
There is a distinct series of tasks associated with every career. If you have no idea how to execute and excel those, there is no chance of you making it till the end. Education helps to identify an accurate channel for you. The entities you aim to affiliate with will design an action plan. Also known as structured learning, it adds a discipline in your life that will bring abundant rewards later.
Structured learning focuses on a gradual build-up of skills.
For instance, in a Management Course, you will learn leadership principles and ways to deal with conflicts. Make sure you choose the right courses or degree programs that will allow you to reach your destination. Before you begin, analyze the field, the scope it has, and if it matches your caliber.
It teaches you soft skills
Every career demands interpersonal interaction. Education hones these soft skills, enabling people to come out as pros in their field. No matter which field you step in, you can only enhance your competitiveness through critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Some people may term soft skills as “fuzzy.” One cannot measure them or judge them. However, the lack of soft skills can lead even the most well-graded students towards downfall. Modern-day education strives hard to perk up these skills of the students through extra-curricular activities and activity-based learning.
An assessment performed by the Wonderlic identified that 93% of employers state that soft skills are an important aspect while evaluating employees during employment.
You learn ethics ruling your target
Each profession has a set of rules everyone must observe. Like in the medical field, the practitioners must stick to a prescribed code of conduct when interacting with patients. There are legal implications if they cross boundaries of ethical conduct. Similarly, a person who has sufficient education of the domain, they will have a perfect idea of how to demonstrate team spirit and fulfill their responsibilities. The chances of them scoring a job are high.
An article from Six Sigma Online at Aveta Business Institute, states a strong message by the author. The gist of which is, education will always be something that business executives and supervisors like to view. When the applicant has the drive and initiative to expand their knowledge, it’s a sign they will bring immense benefits to the company.
It gives the much-needed confidence
Your academic accomplishments will break the ice that doesn’t let you express yourself. Scared by the ridicule, mockery, and rejection, we tend to keep our thoughts to ourselves.
Education helps with this lack of confidence. It gives you the nerve to express yourself openly and remove roadblocks from your path to success. Those with higher education revealed a significantly higher level of confidence. In turn, they were earning more and were promoted quite often.
It builds connections
Education allows you to enter into new social circles. People around you are all in the same direction. By gaining moral support and confidence from your fellows, you can proceed towards your target. Every time you stumble, there will be people ready to lift you through pep talks and practical support. Sometimes, these connections last for a lifetime, nurturing you all along!
Parting Thoughts
A major benefit of acquiring education towards your dream is the monetary reward. Those with better education are earning more than those with a mediocre education background. The bottom line is, not everyone is as lucky as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Dropping out, aiming to sail your own ship, is no longer an option in the crazy competition we live in today.
So, enrich your future by working hard in the present!
Good Luck!
