My motive here is not to scare you, but to assist you with some amazing apps which helped me during my college years. Most of these apps have been tried and tested by thousands of students including me, and have improved my grades, college and social life for the better.
Now days there are apps for everything, from ordering a pizza to feeding your dog at home while you’re in Italy!! Apps help in our day to day life by allowing us to make difficult and tedious processes easier at the touch of a button. So why not take advantage of these apps in making your college life a lot easier, and consequently build a successful career!
In this article I will cover the top 13 study apps for students which can be of help to them in various aspects of their college/uni life and their alternatives in case the interface of the given app doesn’t suit you. So let’s get to it!
- Evernote: You must have heard about this app or at least come across its elephant head logo at some point. That is because, this one of the oldest study apps for students from this list. Evernote it an app which is designed specifically to save notes, manage tasks, make to-do lists and basically keep yourself organised. It allows you to make notes and sub notes and has many features such checklists and voice notes, attachments, reminders, tables and many more. It even allows you to sync all your notes and data with your account so that you can access them form anywhere at any time. - Office Lens: Office Lens is an app from Microsoft, which enables you to turn any piece of writing in to a text file which you can edit and share through your phone. Be it the text on the whiteboard of your classroom, notebook, journals, TV/mobile screens, magazines, Billboards, receipts or even a car’s license plate, Office lens can convert into a shareable form, simply by open your phones can scanning the item. It has a lot of features which give you numerous customising capabilities such as choosing the type of file you want to convert it into, or taking the picture from an angle and correcting the glare coming off of the screen or some other object. Office lens is available on iOS, Android, Windows and it’s free.
- Dragon Naturally Speaking: Although there are a lot of speech recognition soft wares available in the market today, but Dragon Anywhere is an app which has been most successful out of all those. This app was launched in 2009 by Dragon Systems which is now known as Nuance Communication. This is a premium app which converts speech to text which works with almost 99% accuracy. It is usually used by big companies on a monthly or yearly subscription.
- Speech Notes: If the above price tag seems too expensive to you (it did to me), then you can use this app called SpeechNotes which is specially made to convert long speeches into notes. It allows the user to take breaks and think without pause the transcription, it can also recognize voice commands and so you can even do formatting on the text through voice commands to keep the file organised. It is currently available online and on Android.
- Total Assignment Help: The Total Assignment Help app solved most if not all of my assignment and research related problems. - My Homework student Planner/ Istudiez/ Exam Countdown: If you’re someone who keeps on forgetting the dates of exams and paper submission deadlines then this app will come in handy for you. myHomework app is an student planner and tracking app which tracks the dates of your submission deadlines and classes and exam schedules so that you don’t lose track of the time that you have in order to prepare for your exam or write your assignments. It is helpful for student in all levels such as middle school, high school, or college/university. Its clean user interface allows you to easily check the time left and navigate through your pending tasks. It is currently available on all platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and even Amazon Kindle.
- Duo Lingo: College is a time for learning and expanding your skill sets and capabilities, which is why many students want to learn new languages. This gives them a chance to enhance their personality and open up new career prospects in other foreign countries of their choice. But due to the shortage of time and money they cannot opt for a language class and cannot manage it with all their lectures, assignments and exams.Duo Lingo is one such app that allows you to learn any language of your liking, for absolutely no charge. It allows to learn new languages at you pace and time of liking. It even has tests which grade you and keep on teaching new words. This app gives you a graded certificate which tells you about your level of fluency and how are progressing. It is currently available on all platforms iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and online.
- Cold Turkey: This one is for the people who like me get easily distracted while studying and after a while find themselves watching a video about what type of bread you are.The Cold Turkey is an amazing app which helps you concentrate a lot better by blocking some of the distracting sites and application on your phone for a set amount time. All you have to do is select the site and the apps which you find yourself constantly checking and enter the amount of time for which you want to block it, and then you can study or do your chores peacefully. It is a free app which currently available on Android, Windows and Mac.
- Rockin Ramen: Everyone knows college and university students live a tight budget and therefore cannot splurge on fancy restaurants and take outs every night. That is why Rockin Ramen is an impressive app which has numerous lip smacking recipes you can make in a very short amount of time, and all of them has one main ingredient which is present in very student’s dorm room, Ramen! It is currently available on iOS and Android.
- MealBoard: Although it doesn’t fall directly under the category of study apps for students, but this is another impressive recipes app which will help every university student. This app lets you find delicious dishes which you can make using only the ingredients which are present in your fridge. All you have to do is input the ingredients available to you and a list of dishes will be presented to you. This app is currently available only on iOS.
- Dictionary & Thesaurus: I feel like this is the most underrated app which should be given more focus in every students life. A dictionary and thesaurus app is of the utmost importance throughout the college life of a students, be it during lectures or our on a social hangout, a dictionary app is always useful in learning the meaning of new words and their pronunciations. Thesaurus is an app which would not be of much use in your daily conversational use but when it comes to written communication or assignments and research papers, it is very important to use the correct terminology as it can highly improve the grades that you will be getting for that particular assignment. Which why I would recommend everyone to have a dictionary and thesaurus app in you phone and use it often. There are a lot of dictionary study apps for students out there, but the one from dictionary.com is the one I prefer as it has a thesaurus inbuilt.
- Google Drive: This one is a no-brainer as most of you must be already using it, if not, then are you even in college!? Google Drive or some other cloud storage app is a must for any student as it enables you to store large amounts of data and information on the cloud without occupying space on your mobile device. Gone are the days of carrying USB sticks and flash-drive, a cloud storage or google drive allows to upload your notes, assignments, and other files, online linked to your own password protected account for added protection. It keeps the files safe in case there is a hard drive malfunction or if the laptop of mobile phone is lost or stop working for some reason. It is available free of cost, and all you need to do is make an account.
- Wise Drinking: Now, although drinking is injurious to health and you should always drink responsibly. There is always that one guy in the group who loves to party way too much and ends up making a mess and having to be carried to the dorm. As parties are an integral part of college life, you should always take care of your surroundings and yourself. This app called Wise Drinking, can be a life saver for people who tend to over-do the drinking bit. This app calculates how much blood alcohol levels your body can handle and keep you in your sense. It takes inputs such as you gender, body weight, the time of drinking, height, the meal you ate, and type and the number of drinks you’ve had, and using these values calculates the blood alcohol levels. So can know when to stop! It even alerts you when it is time you should call a cab and marks you location so that you’re safe. It is available on iOS and Android.
- Circle of Six: We all know the current situation in our surroundings and you can help but be extra safe when comes to personal safety. The Circle of 6 app is in the most literal sense a potentially lifesaving app. This app lets you pick out 6 people who would like to notify about your location in case you are traveling at night. It sends an alert to the 6 people in your circle when you tap twice on the app. It is specifically designed to keep students safe from mugging, sexual violence and other forms of harassments. It is a free app which is available on iOS and Android.
That concludes my list of study apps for students, albeit all the apps are not especially study related but they will in some way directly or indirectly make your college or university life much easier and help you a lot in living your best life, all the while improving your grades.
